YOGA - MORE THAN THE SHAPES YOU MAKE. HOW TO START YOUR YOGA JOURNEY.

Most people associate yoga with crazy shapes we can make with our bodies. Yoga is so such more than shapes you can make, it is about how we choose to live our lives. Yoga means union...this connection is the mind, body and spirit. To find a connection with who we truly are.

As a yoga teacher I have witnessed many transformations through a combination of lifestly changes combined with asana practise.

By directing energy around the body, yoga poses and breathing exercises are designed to help resolve and release internal tension and bring out the best in each and every person.

Yoga has something to offer everyone. Whether you are aiming to increase flexibility, build strength, let go of stress, bring more balance to your life or work with a specific injury, yoga can yield incredible benefits.

Once a student realises that what they learn on the yoga mat can be incorporated into a daily routine this is when transformation begins.

It can be a bit bewildering at the beginning of your yoga journey to know where to start. Up there with the number of benefits the number of styles of yoga are plentiful.

Decide firstly on your focus: is it physical, mental or both.

Next, research the type of yoga that fits into the category of your aim. The current most popular styles include Vinyasa flow: continual movement through postures. Yin: long slow meditative holds. Hatha : longer holds using breath work. Restorative: working with an injury, Ashtanga: strong structured sequencing.

After pinpointing a style or a few styles then choose a platform. Platforms include independent yoga teachers, yoga centres, gyms and online tuition. Personal tuition, if available, is preferable especially at the beginning to aid with alignment cues and support.

Now purchase a good mat, a yoga belt and brick or you can start by using a belt and a book for support until you are sure you want to invest.

Do not be dismayed if at first attempt you chose the wrong style or platform there is such diversity in what’s on offer; keep positive and keep searching.

When you find the right yoga for you then you will realise yoga IS for everybody and you will never look back.
